Radiation Safety & NORM Management in Upstream and Downstream Oil & Gas
Protecting Workers, Assets, and the Environment from Radiological Hazards in Petroleum Operations
Course Introduction
Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) can accumulate over time in scale, sludge, produced water, and equipment throughout oil and gas exploration, production, and refining operations. While these materials are naturally found in the earth’s crust, industrial processes can concentrate them to levels that pose health, safety, and environmental risks. NORM contamination is a particular concern in upstream areas like drilling sites and pipelines, as well as in downstream facilities such as refineries and terminals.
As global regulatory standards become more stringent and awareness among workers grows, understanding the risks associated with NORM and how to manage them safely is critical. The Radiation Safety & NORM Management in Upstream and Downstream Oil & Gas training course is designed to equip industry professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective NORM management. Covering key topics such as detection, monitoring, risk assessment, safe handling, transport, and disposal, the course aligns with international best practices and regulatory requirements. By completing this training, participants will be prepared to implement robust radiation protection programs and ensure safer, more compliant operations across the oil and gas value chain.
Training Objectives
By the end of this Radiation Safety & NORM Management training course:
- Understand the origin and behavior of NORM in upstream and downstream oil & gas processes
- Recognize radiological hazards and their implications for worker health and environmental safety
- Conduct NORM risk assessments and implement appropriate radiation protection measures
- Comply with international and national regulations concerning NORM
- Apply techniques for detection, measurement, monitoring, and record-keeping of NORM exposure
- Safely manage NORM-contaminated equipment, waste, and facilities
- Promote continuous improvement in radiation safety culture and environmental stewardship
