Course Introduction

The management of risk, reliability, and safety is crucial for preventing catastrophic failures and disasters while building a culture of continuous learning from past incidents. This Advanced Risk, Reliability and Safety Management Techniques training course is designed to deliver a deep and practical understanding of operational research methods and multi-criteria decision-making frameworks. Participants will explore how these tools can be used to analyse major failures, understand root causes, and develop prevention strategies that strengthen organisational resilience.

Throughout the course, delegates will engage with real-world case studies and apply proven analytical techniques to investigate incidents and failures. The training emphasizes learning from past events and extracting generic lessons that can be applied across different industries. This approach ensures participants not only understand what went wrong, but also how to prevent similar issues through improved systems and processes.

The course curriculum covers advanced concepts in risk assessment, reliability engineering, decision analysis, and safety management. Participants will gain insight into how these disciplines interact and support effective safety protocols, operational reliability, and informed decision-making. By the end of the course, attendees will be equipped with practical tools and strategies to apply these concepts in their professional roles.

Key Highlights

  • Apply operational research techniques to analyse failures and disasters
  • Learn generic lessons from incidents to improve risk management
  • Explore quantitative and qualitative risk analysis approaches
  • Understand reliability engineering concepts and decision support frameworks
  • Gain hands-on experience with case studies and group exercises

Objectives

This COPEX training course is designed to help delegates make a measurable impact on their organisation’s safety, reliability, and risk management performance. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how High Reliability Organisations (HROs) achieve superior safety and reliability through best practices.
  • Identify how day-to-day activities contribute to higher performance and safer operations.
  • Design and implement effective performance metrics that drive continuous improvement.
  • Critically evaluate existing risk, safety, and reliability methodologies and recommend improvements.
  • Connect theoretical concepts with real-world applications, focusing on the latest trends in risk and reliability analysis.
  • Learn how to effectively participate in incident investigation teams and contribute to root-cause analysis.

This training course is ideal for professionals who want to strengthen their organisation’s risk resilience and safety culture through practical tools and advanced techniques.

Training Methodology

This advanced training course combines interactive lectures with practical case studies, group discussions, and hands-on exercises. Each session is designed to encourage active participation and enable delegates to apply new concepts immediately. The course uses real-world incident examples and industry-standard analytical tools, ensuring participants gain practical skills that can be implemented directly in their workplace.

The training also integrates multiple frameworks and models, including reliability block diagrams, fault tree analysis, hazard and operability studies, and stochastic modelling. Through a structured learning approach, participants will understand how these methods complement each other and support a robust risk management system. Group projects and presentations further enhance learning by allowing delegates to practice their skills in a collaborative environment and receive constructive feedback.
