Course Introduction

Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) are present in the earth’s crust and may become concentrated through industrial activities such as oil and gas production, mining operations, water treatment facilities, and geothermal processes. When NORM is not properly identified or controlled, it can pose serious health risks to workers, cause long-term environmental damage, and result in significant regulatory and legal consequences. Understanding how NORM behaves in industrial environments is critical for maintaining safe and compliant operations.

The Managing Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) Training Course is designed to provide professionals with a strong technical foundation in NORM management. This training course explains the sources, characteristics, exposure pathways, and potential risks associated with NORM. Participants will gain practical knowledge of how NORM accumulates during industrial processes and how it can be effectively monitored and controlled using recognized safety practices.

Through expert-led instruction, real-world case studies, and hands-on activities, participants will develop the skills required to manage NORM safely and efficiently. The course emphasizes best practices for detection, evaluation, handling, storage, and disposal of NORM-contaminated materials. Aligned with international guidelines from organizations such as the IAEA and OSHA, this training course is essential for industries where NORM exposure continues to increase.

Key Learning Highlights:

  • Understanding NORM sources and industrial concentration pathways
  • Identifying radiation exposure routes and associated health risks
  • Applying NORM detection and monitoring techniques
  • Implementing safe handling, storage, and disposal practices
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance with international safety standards

Objectives

This training course is designed to build participant competence in managing Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials across industrial environments. By the end of the training course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the nature, sources, and different types of NORM found in various industries
  • Assess radiation risks associated with occupational and environmental NORM exposure
  • Identify and monitor NORM contamination using appropriate radiation detection equipment
  • Apply established safety protocols for handling, storing, transporting, and disposing of NORM
  • Ensure compliance with applicable international and national NORM regulations
  • Develop and implement effective NORM management and remediation plans
  • Conduct workplace radiation risk assessments and communicate findings clearly
  • Prepare structured incident response plans for NORM-related events

Training Methodology

This training course combines theoretical instruction with practical learning to ensure strong understanding and long-term knowledge retention. Instructor-led lectures provide a structured explanation of radiation science, NORM behavior, health effects, and regulatory requirements. These sessions focus on building a clear conceptual foundation for effective NORM management.

To reinforce learning, participants will engage in group discussions, real-world case studies, and hands-on exercises related to NORM detection, monitoring, and risk assessment. Practical activities allow participants to apply learned concepts to realistic scenarios, improving their confidence in managing NORM safely within their own organizations.
